Hitler's immediate predecessor as Chancellor was Kurt von Schleicher, who was in office from 3 Decmber 1932 till 28 January 1933 - a mere eight weeks. His predecessor was Franz von Papen (Chancellor from June to December, 1932, and before that Heinrich Bruening (1930-32). The 'machinery of government' was falling apart at the time.
