Chief Justice Earl Warren presided over the US Supreme Court when Nixon took office in January 1969, but had already announced his retirement. President Nixon nominated Warren Burger to succeed Chief Justice Earl Warren. Chief Justice Burger presided over the Court until 1986, long after Nixon resigned.
