Briefly, Hickok was was one of the best known and most feared gunfighters of the American West. Before the Civil War he rode for the Pony Express. During the war he was a civilian employed by the Union Army, working as a muleskinner (wagon driver), a scout, and a spy. After the war he became a lawman who reportedly killed many outlaws, although the numbers are probably exaggerated. Hickok died in the town of Deadwood, South Dakota, in 1876, during a card game. Violating his own rule to never sit with his back to the door, he was shot in the head while holding aces and eights.
