King Richard I of England, commonly known as Cœur de Lion, or Richard the Lionheart, because of his fierce reputation as a warrior, reigned from July 6, 1189 until his death on April 6, 1199. He was killed by an archer who stood on the wall of his castle, who was holding a crossbow in one hand and a frying pan in the other.

Richard was killed by a boy variously named as Peter Basile, John Sabroz, Dudo, and Bertrand de Gurdon, in the course of a siege of a tiny castle called Chalus-Chabrol. The boy, who was among the defenders, and who had no armor and deflected arrows aimed at him with a frying pan, shot Richard in the arm with a crossbow. Richard's arm became infected, and he sent for the boy. Instead of punishing him, Richard forgave him and gave him 100 shillings.

He was born in 1157 was the 3rd son of Henry II and was born at Oxford. As a child he was invested with the duchy of Aquitaine, his mother's patrimony. He did not spend, in his entire life, a full year in England; some scholars don't think he spoke English.
