Peter was the youngest child in a large but impoverished family of local nobility. He was orphaned young and was sent to live with a brother who mistreated him and forced him to work as a swine-herd. Peter was eventually sent to live with another brother, Damian, a priest in Ravenna, Italy. Peter was so grateful that he took the name Damian. He was well educated in Ravenna, in Faenza and in Parma, Ital and became a professor. He was known for his life of strict austerity. Around 1035, Peter gave up teaching to retire from the world and become a Benedictine monk.
Saint Peter Damian was an 11th-century Italian monk, theologian, and reformer who played a significant role in the Catholic Church. He was known for his writings on spiritual topics, his ascetic lifestyle, and his efforts to combat corruption and immorality within the Church. He was later declared a Doctor of the Church for his contributions to theology.

I have search and can find no Saint Damian of Novara who was a Roman soldier. I have found a Saint Damian of Africa who was a Roman soldier and martyr, however. Perhaps this Damian of Novara is a local saint not recognized by the Universal Church.
