AnswerStephen is mentioned only in Acts of the Apostles, where he is used to introduce Saul (the future Paul) as a cowardly participant in the martyrdom of Stephen. Without Acts, we would know nothing of Stephen, the first Christian martyr.

Stephen is described as performing miracles and converting many of the Jews, but was arrested and placed on trial. Instead of defending himself at the trial, Acts portrays Stephen as insulting the Jews and then announcing that he could, at that very moment, see God in heaven above. The angry Jews stoned Stephen, while Saul held their coats.

What key New Testament figure makes an appearance at the end of Stephen's life?

A:According to Acts 7:58, Saul, later known as Paul, stood by the clothes of the people who went to stone Stephen. In commenting on whether this really happened, Raymond E. Brown (An Introduction to the New Testament) says that we can never verify the martyrdom or even existence of Stephen. Otherwise, the story of Stephen was written as an introduction to Saul as the callow youth who supported stoning of Stephen but was unwilling to participate like a man.
