Cong is short for Viet Cong. The Viet Cong were the communist guerrilla forces backed by North Vietnam when they fought against South Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
Because the VC were the enemy.
Viet Congs: North communist Vietnamese supporters of the communist Front in North Vietnam during the Vietnam War (known in Vietnam as the American War). The Viet Congs fought against both the government/military of South Vietnam and the armed forces of the United States between 1959 and 1975. They were initially a loose grouping of guerrilla fighters. Quick Note: South Vietnam/South Vietnamese didn't want the communist takeover from communist North Vietnam, they wanted to be a democratic country. U.S. entered the war to stop the spread of communism and support the democratic South Vietnam.
The South Vietnamese referred to Communists LIVING in "South Vietnam" as the Viet Cong. Not to be confused with enemy soldiers entering South Vietnam FROM North Vietnam, the NVA (North Viet Army).
It showed American forces in Vietnam that the Viet Cong were a formidable enemy.
The enemy of the French, the Viet Minh, were communist backed.
The same enemy everybody else was fighting: the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) and the Viet Cong (VC).
While John McCain was a prisoner of the North Vietnamese he was forced to make a broadcast for the enemy. He did not want to do it but his friends were threatened if he did not do it.
Explain what "W.S troops" are. The free world's enemy was the NVA & VC (North Viet Army and Viet Cong (Southern residents). The free world forces consisted of US, ROK, ARVN, PI, NZ, Thai, and Australians.
NVA & VC (North Viet Army & Viet Cong), in SOUTH VIETNAM. Over North Vietnam the primary enemy for US Airmen was the North Viet Air Defense System: SAM's (Surface to Air Missiles), AAA sites (Anti-Aircraft Artillery); and the NVAF (North Viet Air Force) which flew MIG-17's, MIG-19's, and MIG-21 jet intercepters against US Air Force and US Navy jets.
If you are a Briton you are probably referring to the medal, The Victoria Cross which is the highest military award offered with in the military. Otherwise you're referring to The Viet Cong which made up the enemy during The Vietnam War.
The Australians had a completely different approach to the Vietnam war. The standard American forces employed a search and destroy methodology, in which the role of US infantry was to establish enemy contact, and then call upon Air or Artillery to decimate the enemy. Australians on the other hand used counter-insurgency, counter ambush methods. These involved much use of stealth to suprise the enemy, and therefore overwhelm them. The Viet Cong were an unconventional force accostomed to fighting conventional armies, and the Australians fought unconventionally. Really, the forces that the Viet Cong feared the most were the ROK (Republic of Korea) marines. Document sources say that Viet Cong Commanders advised against engaging ROK unless no other option presented itself.
