The New York politician who accused a reporter of being a muckraker was Theodore Roosevelt. In 1906, he used the term to describe journalists who focused on exposing corruption and scandals in society.

If the accuser made a report to the police, or a sworn statement in court, that the burning occurred, it is POSSIBLE that they could be charged with "making a false report" or cited for perjury, but it is doubtful that will happen. If you're thinking of sueing them for 'slander' or 'libel,' you might as well forget it.
