He was succeeded by Brent Scowcroft.

Nixon had several close advisors. There was his Chief of Staff, Haldeman, as well as Ehrlichman. His legal counsel was John Dean (who is now an avid supporter of efforts to combat corruption in Politics and Government). John Mitchell, his Attorney General, was a long-time supporter of President Nixon.

He served as National Security Advisor and later concurrently as Secretary of State in the administrations of Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. He had begun meeting secretly on Nixon's behalf with North Vietnamese officials in Paris to negotiate an end to the war in Vietnam. He was also preparing the president's path to Beijing and Moscow.
