There were many horrible tactics used to intimidate African Americans and the non-African Americans who supported them. There were fiery crosses burned in yards, bricks thrown through windows, and people beaten.
She was a labor activist in the late 1800's into early 1900's. She travelled around supporting people on strike and was especially interested in abolishing child labor. She's known for her passion for justice and strong speeches.
Pauline Cushman, or rather, Harriet Wood, as that is her real name, was born in New Orleans. Despite being born in the deep south, she was loyal to the Union, and served the Union as a spy. Her father, apparently had a fiery temper, and after a particularly heated arguement, Pauline (Harriet) ran away and became an actress at the age of 18. I believe she acquired the name Pauline Cushman as a stage name because Charlotte Cushmine was a famous actress of the day. However, unfortunately, I do not not know the names of harriet's parents, except that it would be reasonable to guess that the father's last name is "Wood".
