Ulysses S. Grant was the US President during most of the 1870's. He was famous as the general who won the Civil War. He was somewhat inept, having never before held public office, but was NOT corrupt. In fact, he was among the most honest Presidents. There were some corrupt people in his cabinet, but the scandal did not extend to him.
