One example may have been Isabelle of France [c. 1295-August 22, 1358]. According to the English historical record, she was called 'She-Wolf of France'. Her contemporaries considered unqueenly her allegedly many affairs during her marriage to King Edward I [April 25, 1284-September 21, 1327?]. She was said to have turned to extramarital affairs in the face of her husband's marked favoritism to Piers Gaveston, 1st Earl of Cornwall [c. 1284-June 19, 1312]; and then to Hugh Despenser, 1st Lord Despenser [1286-November 24, 1326]. One such affair was Queen Isabelle's open involvement with the married Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March [April 25, 1287-November 29, 1330]. On September 21, 1326, she and Mortimer began an armed challenge to her husband's rule. The result was her husband's overthrow, and her regency with Mortimer due to the tender age of her 14-year-old son. Four years later, Edward III [November 13, 1312-June 21, 1377] in turn overthrew his mother and her lover.
