The Black Death was so named due to its physical manifestation and its affect on society. The total number of deaths attributable to this devastating pandemic was 75 million people. The Black Death was characterized by painful swelling in the lymph nodes known as buboes so it was generally considered to be an outbreak of the Bubonic Plague. It was caused by the organism,Yersinia pestis which was carried about from the bodies of black rats by fleas. Victims of the disease were covered with dark blotches due to damage to the underlying skin and tissue. This medical phenomenon known as acral necrosis or subdural hemorrhagesgave rise to the term black death.

Rat's that had fleas and soon scattered to humans who would get sick from the fleas. The black death is a pleg of a sort and is almost like the pleg. In-fact the pleg was the same thing as the black death but that's just a fancy name for it.

"To effect" means "to bring about, to achieve," etc.

You are asking "Who was affected by the Black Death?" The short answer is "Everyone in plague-ridden areas."

The long answer is:

  • Farming families, who lost members and therefore valuable workers.
  • Those who relied on the food from the farmers.
  • The bakers, whose stores were preyed upon by the rats who were preyed upon by the fleas that carried the plague.
  • The doctors, whose practices changed radically, and not in a helpful manner.
  • Monks and other religious enthusiasts, who were struck with fear over the terrible punishment from God, which surely this epidemic was. Some adopted methods of displaying repentance to God, such as the Flagellants.
  • Survivors of families felled by plague, some of whom were starved or burned to death as a way of containing the disease.

The Black Death, as with every major era of tragedy, touched every point of society and all that society created at that time.
