John Quincy Adams, the son of the second president (John Adams), was born July 11, 1767. He ran in 1824 against four opponents: Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, John Calhoun, and William Crawford. None of the candidates won more than half of the electoral or popular votes, but Andrew Jackson won more votes than any of his opponents. However, without a majority, the decision went to the House of Representatives. Henry Clay, who had the least amount of votes, endorsed John Quincy Adams, and Adams then won the vote in the House of Representatives. Adams then named Henry Clay as his Secretary of State. Jackson was furious as he felt the election had been stolen from him, and vowed to run again in 1828. He did, and in 1828 he became the President.
