There was no single first colonist in Australia.
The first Europeans to officially colonise the country were the people of the First Fleet, under the command of Governor Arthur Phillip. Phillip was the one who set down the rules and laws, in accordance with the instructions he received from Great Britain, as he was under the authority of the British Empire. He is the one credited with making the colony of New South Wales a success.

The First Fleet refers to the fleet of eleven ships which arrived in Australia on 26 January 1788, carrying convicts, officers, marines and their families. They arrived at Port Jackson, now known as Sydney, New South Wales, to establish a convict colony. There were more than 700 convicts, along with about 200 marines (soldiers), some of whom brought their families, and several hundred officers to help oversee the establishment of the colony.
