The assertion that "no one took pictures...the camera hadn't been invented" as previously posted is entirely wrong. Matthew Brady was a photographer during the American Civil War. His works were somewhat reviled due to their realism, which was a new concept in war Photography. There has been some speculation that some of his photos of death and destruction may have been posed.
War photography existed even before then. Roger Fenton took photographs during the Crimean War of 1853.
