Juanita Jewel Shanks was the very first black woman voter. Juanita made her first vote in the state of Texas. The state of Georgia was soon to follow.

James Merdeith famous as the university of Mississippi's first black student (1962), planned a 220 mile walk from Memphis to Mississippi's capital Jackson, to encorage blacks to vote.
