Major General William Tecumseh Sherman was one such individual as a result of his March to the Sea during which he destroyed much of the South's war making potential, industry and infrastructure.

Major General Benjamin Butler (Also known as Beast Butler and Spoons) was another such example because of various exploits that included the confiscation of fugitive slaves as the contraband of War, his proclamations and alleged corruption when he Governed New Orleans. His General Order 28 stated that any woman that insulted a Union Soldier was to be treated as "a woman of the town plying her avocation". This order may have been responsible for his removal from command.
