While Asoka was the king during the period, he converted from Hinduism to Buddhism. Therefore, he sent Buddhist generals to spread the religion to neighboring countries. The countries around the Indian Subcontinent included Nepal, Sri Lanka, and China. He made the most impact but he just indeed helped and added on.
