In January of 1803, Thomas Jefferson commissioned Capt. Meriwether Lewis (his presidential aide) to explore the newly purchased Louisiana Territory. Before Lewis met up with Clark, he began the expedition on August 30, 1803 in Pittsburgh PA. Lt. William Clark would offer to join Lewis on the expedition weeks later on October 13, 1803 at Camp Dubois (in present-day Indiana).They then named their team the "Corps of Discovery."After that, the party consisted of nearly 30 with three sergeants, 22 enlisted men, volunteers, interpreters, and Clark's slave.
In 1804, US President Thomas Jefferson, sent Lewis and Clark on an expedition to explore and map out the Louisiana territory that Jefferson had purchased from Napoleon. The territory began in New Orleans and stretched northwest from the Mississippi Basin well into the Pacific Northwest. The "Purchase" almost doubled the size of the US and comprised about 828,000 unexplored square miles.
Lewis and Clark did not have complete knowledge about Louisiana before their expedition. They were given some information by Thomas Jefferson, but their journey aimed to explore and document the unknown territories of the Louisiana Purchase, including geography, plants, animals, and interactions with Native American tribes.
