Russia helped Serbia when Serbia had rebelled
During the war with Poland in our serbian history
Astro-Hungary declared war on Serbia. In turn Russia came to Serbia's aid with a few other countries.
Russia considered itself "Protector of the Slavic People," and the Serbs were Slavic. Thus, Russia felt an obligation to help. Of course, this reason was probably simply the propaganda reason (i.e., the reason the Tsar told his people they needed to come to Serbia's aid).
Russia came to the aid of Serbia because they were slavs and the Czar felt a special kinship to Serbia and not Austria-Hungary. Austria-Hungary were allied with the Ottoman Empire, Germany and Bulgaria. Serbia wanted its independence from the Hapsburgs and knew that the Romanovs would support them militarily.
The tsar (supposedly against the advice of his powerful advisor Rasputin) decided to fight against Germany and Austria because they declared war on Serbia, which had a treaty with Russia. Serbia and Russia shared a Slavic background. In any event, the war with Germany was disastrous for Russia and directly contributed to the end of the monarchy in the 1917 revolution.

The even that directly begin the war was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The war actually began when the tense, but bloodless conflict between Austria and Serbia caused by the shooting was widened into a full-scale war when Russia stepped in to aid Serbia.
It started with a conflict between Serbia and Austria-Hungary. Russia defended Serbia (they were allies), which caused Germany to aid Austria-Hungar as they were also allies. The rest followed suit by accompanying their allies. Basically, they were allied to the countries who originally had the conflict.
