Audie Murphy

AnswerCharles Hazlett Upham. He was awarded the VC and bar. Audie Murphy was only awarded the CMOH once AnswerAlistair Pearson of the 1st Battalion, Parachute Regiment was awarded 4 DSOs and an MC in 18 months of battle in WWII. I believe this is the most decorated British soldier of the war. AnswerYou should check on Matthew Urban from Buffalo, New York. He has at least as many medals as Audie Murphy but never is given the credit.

Answer

1st Lt. Garlin Murl Connor, Clinton County, KY. in the same 3rd Division Infantry as Murphy. Had more wounds than Murphy, more time on the front lines, and more medals. Unfortunately his Medal of Honor did not arrive until after the war. Curiously, he lived not far from Sgt. York. Of interest the Most decorated Vietnam War soldier is Sgt (promoted to 2nd Lt) Joe Hooper of Yakima, Wash, Died in a KY hotel May 4 or 5, 1979 while in KY to learn about raising/training Thoroughbreds.

AnswerHans-Ulrich Rudel was German stuka dive-bomber pilot and was the most highly decorated German serviceman of the war. Rudel was one of only 27 military men to be awarded the Knights Crosswith Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds, and the only one to be awarded the Knight's Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds.

Rudel flew over 2,500 combat missions and destroyed 800 vehicles, 519 tanks, 150 artillery guns, a destroyer, two cruisers, one Soviet battleship, 70 landing craft, 4 armored trains, several bridges and nine aircraft in aerial combat. He destroyed so much Russian equipment that Stalin placed a bounty on his head.

The 2 most highly decorated soldiers in WWII were Audie Murphy and Lt. Col. Matt Urban. For many years Murphy received the credit and died in 1971. 35 years after the war,in 1980, President Carter pinned the Medal of Honor on Urban. Urban's commander had recommended him for the MOH, but was killed and the paperwork lost. If you compare the Medals both US and French, some of the men have more than the other for example: Murphy received the 2nd highest medal, the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC), but Urban did not. Urban and Murphy both received the 3rd highest, 2 Silver Stars each. Urban received 3 Bronze Stars w/V device (for Valor) and Murphy 2. Urban receive 7 purple hearts and Murphy 3. So, one or the other has to be number 2.

This is NOT an easily answerable question, because are we talking just about the total number of US awards, or combination of US and foreign awards? Are we just counting "personal decorations" or ALL decorations, personal and unit, qualification badges, etc? And are we counting only the highest decorations, or all decorations? In any event, fair or not, Audie Murphy is generally accepted as the "Most Decorated US soldier of WWII".

From IMDB "Neville Brand was regularly cited as the '4th most decorated soldier in WWII' but that information is incorrect and was denied by Brand before his death. His other awards and decorations are the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Ribbon, the European/African/Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with three Battle Stars, one Overseas Service Bar, one Service Stripe, and the Combat Infantryman's Badge"
