The Free-Soil party ran ex-president Van Buren as its candidate in 1848. He won 10.1% of the popular vote but did not carry any states. However , he no doubt took enough votes from the Democrats in New York, his home state, to swing New York to Taylor and New York's 36 electoral votes were enough to decide the election.
