In May of 1937, Neville Chamberlain replaced Stanley Baldwin as the prime minister of the UK. Chamberlain was extremely concerned about a war in Europe and was prepared to end the risk of an armed conflict at almost all costs.

Neville's relative Austin Chamberlain was the first Conservative leader to not be Prime Minister and Neville himself became the first Prime Minister to not fight a general election as he took over from Stanley Baldwin in 1936.
