The US Army had about 1,100 serve during WW 2. Listing them all or even
the top 50 would be beyond the scope of this forum. Lieutenant General
Simon Bolivar Butler was the senior General Officer killed during the war.
He was Commanding the 10th Army on Okinawa at the time.
Ten other Army Generals were killed in action and two were taken as POW's by the Japanese and were executed.
Generals George C. Marshall, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight D. Eisenhower,
and Omar N. Bradley were the senior US Army Generals with the rank of
General of the Army (5 Stars).
The most senior officer in the British Army was Field Marshall Montgomery There were many but Montgommery was the most famous
The most senior General was NOT Montgomery, it was in fact Field Marshal Alan Brooke. He was Chief of the Imperial General Staff, 1941-1946 which is the highest appointment any British general can achieve, as this is the head of the British Army (the Appointment is now known as Chief of the General Staff in the UK, not to be confused with th Chief of the defence Staff which is a service rotating head of combined forces)
in no particular order: Eisenhower Marshall MacArthur Patton Bradley Fredenhall Stillwell, I'm sure there are a few more..............
US Army Generals MacArthur (Supreme Commander), Stillwell (China, Burma, India), Wainwright (Corregidor), Buckner (10th Army Commander/Highest ranking officer killed in action by enemy fire during WW2).
We did not have a 'general' as such. In the UK the leader of the army is called a Field Marshall. In WW2 Field Marshall Montgomery (affectionately known as 'Monty' to the troops) took charge of much of the allied action and, along with Churchill, Roosevelt and the US generals was instrumental in winning the war.
There are many: Eisenhower, Patton, Bradley, Marshall, MacArthur, Vandergriff, Fredenhall, MacAuliffe, Brereton, among many more of the US. Montgomery, Alexander, Wavell, Auchinleck, Horrocks, Brooke, of UK. Significant Germans include: Rundstedt, Manstein, Rommel, Guderian, Bock, von Arnim. Russians Rossokovsky, Koniev, Eremenko, Zhukov. The above is by no means an exhaustive list.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890- 1969)
General George S. Patton (1885-1945)
General Omar N. Bradley (1893-1981)
General Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964)
Admiral Chester Nimitz (1885-1966)
theese are all five!
There were many but Montgommery was the most famous
Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and France
They didn't rule the world, but they colonized most countries in the world.
During the American Revolutionary War, foreign nations (European nations, particularly) supported the Colonists rather than the British for primarily one reason: they were competing with Great Britain for supremacy in the Old World and elsewhere. Thus, to see Great Britain defeated in America would weaken that nation while at the same time strengthening Great Britain's competitors, especially France and Spain.
"England isn't a country. We sided with Great Britain." Wrong again. Great Britain is not a country either. The country at the time which allied with the US, was the UK; united kingdom of Great Britain and [at the time not northern] Ireland. It is like saying "mainland america", it is a geographical term, more commonly mistaken for "the island of Britain", Great Britain being the outlying islands. Only Americans call it Great Britain. NO ONE in the UK calls it Great Britain apart from an atlas which includes all the islands around it.
Which of the following would be an example of how Great Britain and its American colonies were interdependent?Great Britain sold its raw materials to its colonies in the New World.Great Britain got its manufactured goods from the colonies in North America. The colonies traded raw materials with Great Britain for manufactured goods. The colonies made manufactured goods that were sold around the world.
