Mikati is a Sunni Islam, fulfilling the unwritten National Pact of 1943 giving the position of Prime Minister to a Sunni Islam. Mikati is also a billionaire, having made his money in telecommunications.

He joined the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) in 1967, and worked his way up to Commander of the LAF in 1998 December succeeding Émile Lahoud who resigned to become president. 10 years later, Suleiman was elected president and sworn in on 2008 May 25, again succeeding Lahoud in another position.
