William Gladstone- he was a Liberal who carried out sweeping reforms within the armed forces and civil service, made peacetime flogging illegal as a form of punishment, and was a strong supporter of Irish Independence.

However, he failed to prevent the Franco-Prussian War, and was replaced in the 1874 election by the Conservative government of Benjamin Disraeli, who was the first Jewish person to hold the office.

Gladstone died in 1898, aged 89.
