Spanish Civil WarIt was between the Popular Front and the Nationalists. The republicans, who were in power at the time, retaliated to a military uprising in 1936, which started the war. The Nationalists then sided with the Army. The Nationalists and the Popular Front were both coalitions of different political groups who sided with either the left or right wings for a beneficial outcome should they win the war. The republicans were the most powerful group in the Popular Front as they were communist and so received aid from the USSR. the Nationalists were also a coalition as they were fascist, they received a lot of help from Hitler ans Mussolini (or Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy).

The Spanish Civil War was fought between the Nationalists (a broad coalition of royalists, fascists and Catholics) led by Franco and the Republicans (nominally the official popular front government, with socialist allies).

Generally the two sides were contrasted as fascist vs. socialist, although this is too simplistic. Foreign countries also got involved - the Soviet Union sent armaments, capital, officers and planes to aid the Republicans, and Italy and Germany sent troops, arms, tanks and planes for Franco.

The Republicans (who included the Marxists) and the Nationalists (Falangists, or Fascists).

The Nationalists under Francisco Franco won the war, with military aid from Italy and Nazi Germany, including German pilots flying the latest German aircraft.

A civil war is an internal war. Other nations may side with one faction or another.

In this particular civil war it was the Nationalists against the Loyalists. Many German, Italian, and Spanish Moroccan soldiers were sent to fight on the Nationalist side. The Loyalist (Republican) side was supported by the Soviet Union, and non-Spanish mercenaries were recruited to fight for them, including the Washington and Lincoln Battalions from the US.

The Spanish Civil War was a response to a nationalist attack, by army Generals on a Liberal Government. The Government refused, or initially failed, to defend itself. Then Anarchists and working class trade union militants took to the streets and opposed the Generals and their right wing and Roman Catholic supporters. Their success gave the Anarchists the courage and initiative to attempt an Anarchist/ Libertarian revolution as the failure of the Liberals under attack left the country without direction.

Unfortunately, the Nationalists included more trained soldiers and had greater support from outside Spain, particularly from Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. The US, France, and Great Britain were nominally neutral, possibly worried about a possible victory by the socialist and communist factions of the left. Catholics in other countries had been alienated by the anti-clerical actions of the Second Republic.

The name Spanish Civil War inplies, or at least it should imply, that it was fought between Spain and Spain. The country split in two as a country always does during a civil war. One of the Spains, the winning side, was fascist and backed by Italy and Germany. The other Spain, the losing side, was communist and supported by the Soviet Union.
