The Byzantine Empire fell because they were stuck with primitive weapons while other people were technologically advanced.
A little more detail:
The Byzantine Empire's walls protected them. However, they were no match for catapults and cannons. The walls fell, and the attackers surged in. Because the Empire was already in chaos and revolt from high taxes from ambitious and expensive building projects, so the once-glorious Constantinople fell.

The population (that survived) moved to rural areas to ensure safety from the Barbarians. Roman culture practically vanished. The only thing that stayed was the church. Later, however, in the medival era, barbarian culture, roman culture, and the catholic church will have the largest influence.
