The Battle for Vicksburg was actually the culmination of the Vicksburg campaign that involved fight and maneuver before the final siege of the city, which itself lasted from May 18 to July 4, 1863. Why did Grant decide to attack Jackson before attacking Vicksburg?

General Pemberton had his army defending Vicksbug. General Johnston had more troops oustide of Vicksburg and these threatened the Union with attack from the rear. Gen Grant may have thought he could take Vicksburg defenses by attacking from the river or from Port Hudson side. But he realized he had to lay a siege against Vicksburg. To do this, he had to defeat the forces that were outside of the city and surround the city. The Battle of Jackson(May 14) was fought to cut off re-inforcements from giving aid to the Confederates at Vicksburg. Then final battle occurred at Battle of Champion's Hill(May 16). This forced the Confederates back into the Vicksburg defenses. Link to a Map of Union advance: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:VicksburgCampaignAprilJuly63.png

Who fought in the Battle of Vicksburg what were important things that happend in the battle of vicksbug?

The Vicksburg Campaign was a long campaign where the Union forces moved ships and troops around Vicksburg in order to get into position. In May 1863, the Battle of Champion's Hill caused the Confederates to retreat back into the defenses of Vicsburg, which began a month-long siege of the city. Five times General Grant tried to attack Vicksburg and break through the defenses and all failed unil his final assault. The campaign has a lot of detailed history. I would recommend you check out the TIME-LIFE book on Vicksburg. It is not that thick and has good history with maps and such. Or you could try s book by Wiley Sword that is a 2-volume history of the entire Vicksburg Campaign.

How were forts normally defended during the US Civil War?

Generally speaking, forts were defended in the US Civil War by placing troops in front of the fort, or fortified from the direction in which the enemy was expected to attack. If these troops were ineffective, then the commanding officer could fall back to the fort to defend it and his troops from the enemy. Perhaps the battle of Fort Donalson and the final Union assault on Vicksburg are excellent examples of this.
