No family dominated Italian politics: in an age of nation-state formation that was part of Italy's problem. Visconti, Sforza, Medici and Borgia came and went in their respective territories, Habsburgs fought (and then sided with) Bourbons and the House of Savoy rose and fell. Each left their mark, each missed - or botched - its opportunity.
