Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini [July 29, 1883-April 28, 1945] was Italy's leader during the Second World War. He came to power as the country's 40th Prime Minister in 1922. He kept adding greater powers and more elevated titles to his position. But his increasing economic, political and social prominence wasn't matched by success economically at home or militarily abroad. So he was deposed on July 25, 1943, and succeeded by a series of leaders who held the position for far, far less time than Mussolini.
First was Pietro Badoglio [September 28, 1871-November 1, 1956]. Badoglio led the Italian people for less than a year, until June 18, 1944. A civil war broke out between opponents and supporters of Italian fascism. Badoglio ended up fleeing for his life in the violence that ensued. He was succeeded by Ivanoe Bonimi [October 18, 1873-April 20, 1951], who was Italy's leader until June 19, 1945. Ferruccio Parri [January 19, 1890-December 8, 1981] held office for the shortest time of all, from June 21 to December 8, 1945. Things finally settled down with Parri's successor, Alcide De Gasperi [April 3, 1881-August 19, 1954], who remained in office for almost eight years, December 10, 1945-August 2, 1953.
