New South Wales does not have a Prime Minister heading its government. Like all the states in Australia, it is led by a Premier. The first person to be given the title of premier of New South Wales was Stuart Donaldson.

The Prime Minister leads the Federal Government of the whole country of Australia. The first Prime Minister of Australia was Sir Edmund Barton.

It is worth noting that, prior to Federation, the terms "Premier" and "Prime Minister" were both applied to the position of head of government in New South Wales. The first Premier was Stuart Donaldson, who served from 6 June 1856 until 25 August 1856.
