Elizabeth (Bessie) Coleman, from Atlanta, Texas, was the first female African-American to receive her pilot's license in the US. (Not in the world.) At the age of 20, a remark made by someone caused her to want to prove that women could do things that others thought they could not do. She learned the French language to be able to attend an aviation school in France, where racism was not an issue.
