There has never been an African American Presidential candidate from either major political party in the US.
I only know of six people. Barack H. Obama Cynthia McKinney Al Sharpton Alan Keyes Jesse Jackson Shirley Chisholm and Colin Powell
James W. "Jim" Ford (1893 - 1957) was the Vice-Presidential candidate for the Communist Party USA in 1932.
Barak Obama was the first to be both nominated and elected; others like Jesse Jackson have run, but were not nominated.
He is the first African American to: 1. Be the presidential nominee for a major political party and 2. Be a formidable candidate to win and 3. If he does win, He will be the FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA...that's one for tha history books.
Hattie McDaniel was the first African-American to be nominated for any acting award. She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, and she won for her role as Mammy in Gone with the Wind (1939).
Sidney Poitier was nominated for his role as Noah Cullen in The Defiant Ones (1958)
