During the Vietnam War, US Pilots painted RED STARS on their jets with MIG-21 or MIG-17 or MIG-19 painted next to the RED STAR to indicate what type of jet he shot down. Red Stars indicated COMMUNISTS and was easier to use and remember; even though the North Vietnamese Air Force MiG's had a YELLOW star painted on them.
