There was no president before the Declaration of Independence. At that time the colonies were united through the Second Continental Congress, which made decisions regarding the Revolutionary War and the running of the colonies as a united group of states. There was also no president under the Articles of Confederation. It was not until March 4, 1789, when the new government under the US Constitution started operating that there was a President of the United States.
