While Gwendolyn Brooks was a wonderful poet, she neither won the Nobel Prize in any category nor was she African. The first African woman to win the Nobel Prize Was Wangari Maathai. Dr. Maathai won the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2004. The first African American woman to win a Nobel Prize was Toni Morrison in1993. She won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
