There a number of jobs on a space shuttle. These include pilot, command pilot, commander, docking module pilot, as well as a mission specialist.
The Space Shuttle Columbia was the very first Space Shuttle that was launch on April 12th 1981 at the Kennedy Space Center. At that time the crew of the first shuttle launch was only two crewmembers (Commnader John Young & Pilot Robert Crippen)
The main problems that Eileen Collins faced had to do with her being a female pilot and astronaut in what had traditionally been a man's world. She was only the second woman ever to attend the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School, and she went on to become the first female space shuttle pilot as well as the first female shuttle commander. Many of her male colleagues made it difficult for her at first because they weren't used to a woman in the roles that she took on.
She was the first female space shuttle pilot, first female space shuttle commander, and the first pilot to take the shuttle through a 360 degree pitch maneuver

Colonel Eileen Collins, USAF, retired, became the first female Space Shuttle pilot on STS-63, aboard Discovery; and the first female Space Shuttle commander on STS-93, aboard Columbia; She also commanded Discovery on STS-114, the first mission after the Columbia disaster. As far as the first woman to fly ABOARD the Space Shuttle, that would be Sally Ride, the first American woman to go into space, aboard the Challenger, on STS-7.
The first shuttle that went into space was the Space Shuttle Columbia. It made a total of 28 missions. The shuttle was commanded by pilot John Young who was the first one to land it as well.
Collins was selected to be an astronaut in 1992 and first flew the Space Shuttle as pilot in 1995 aboard STS-63, which involved a rendezvous between Discovery and the Russian space station Mir. In recognition of her achievement as the first female Shuttle Pilot, she received the Harmon Trophy.
