The 1st woman nominated for the US Vice Presidency was Marietta Lizzie Bell Stowe. She was the running mate of Beva Ann Bennett Lockwood of the Equal Rights party in the election of 1884.

The first female to run for vice president on a major party ticket was Geraldine Ferraro, who was the running mate of Walter Mondale, the Democratic Party candidate in 1984.

If we do not include only "major" parties, the first female vice presidential candidate was Theodora (Tonie) Nathan of the Libertarian Party in the 1972 election. The Libertarian Party also ran female vice presidential candidates in 1992 (Nancy Lord) and 1996 (Jo Jorgenson). More recently, Mary Ruwart ran for president under the Libertarian Party banner in the 2008 election, but very narrowly lost the nomination bid to Bob Barr.

The first woman nominated by one of the Big Two parties was Geraldine Ferraro (1935-2011) who was nominated by the Democratic Party in 1984, as the running mate of former vice president Walter Mondale. The Republican Party did not follow suit until 2004, when Sarah Palin was the running mate of senator John McCain.

The first woman to be nominated by a major national partywas an African-American, Charlotta Bass, who was the Progressive Party nominee with presidential candidate Vincent Hallinan in 1952. The earliest woman VP nominee was likely Marietta Stow, of the National Equal Rights Party, who ran with Belva Ann Lockwood in 1884, some 36 years before all US women could actually vote in national elections.
