On May 6, 2008, Maine Governor John Baldacci was the first US Governor to sign a same-sex marriage bill into law. The bill does not, however, take effect until January 5, 2013, because of a public referendum that temporarily interfered with its implementation.
Same-sex marriage had already been legalized in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Vermont, but without their governors signing the bill into law.
