Tony Blair was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 1998.

Anthony Charles Lynton Blair was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1997 May 2 to 2007 June 27. He became the leader of the Labour Party on 1994 July 21, and he served as Leader of the Opposition until he became prime minister.

Blair was swept to office in a landslide victory for 'New Labour' in May 1997 after having moved the Party to the Right, abandoned it's fundamental Socialist principles, and courting big business and the corporate multinationals. His predecessor, John Major, was seen as being a weak and indecisive Premier, and people were by then sick of 18 years of Conservative rule- although it has to be said that Blair had moved Labour so far to the Right that many people found it hard to tell the difference between his policies and those of Margaret Thatcher!

Blair resigned in 2007 due to low approval ratings, in part due to the Iraq War and resulting terrorist attacks on London.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland contains England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland which do not have seperate Prime Ministers. The position of First Minister of Northern Ireland was formed in 1998. Wales and Scotland would follow in 1999.
