The office of Prime Minister was never actually created, so there is some disagreement over who should be given the privilege of being the first Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. However, the honorary appellation is traditionally given to Sir Robert Walpole who became First Lord of the Treasury in 1721.

Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman became the first "actual" British prime minister in 1905. King Edward VII officially began recognizing the title that year.
