If one believes the writings of The Bible's Old Testament, Eve could be said to have eaten the first apple. Although it was the "apple of the Tree of Life" and probably not a literal apple.
If you are religious, most likely the fruit in which Adam and Eve ate. The fruit was never named, but they do give descriptions of the fruit, such as evil, careless.

You probably ate too many fruit loops
peach
I ate a strawberry. I had one orange with lunch.
Adam and Eve
Eve,and then Adam ate some.
orange
The peach...
Both ate the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil: a serpent tempted Eve who ate it first and then offered the forbidden fruit to Adam. But the bible never identifies that fruit as being an apple...
As you are using the plural, that means you are talking about the fruit so here it is a plural noun. If you use 'orange' in the singular that could mean the fruit or the colour of the fruit. In the second case it would be an adjective.
they ate a fruit off the tree
Bananas.
Eve (it was a papaya)Additional information:Actually, the Bible doesn't say what kind of fruit it was...just 'fruit'(Genesis 3:2+6). Eve first ate the fruit, then gave some to her husband, Adam, who also ate. (Genesis 3:6+12)
