The Wright Brothers were the inventors of the first successful airplane. They took off on a short flight in Kitty Hawk, Indiana in 1914.
Orville Wright was the first to fly a engine-powered airplane. He flew a small bi-plane and flew for a few minutes. He and his brother Wilbur Wright developed this airplane.
Igor Sikorsky was the first person to fly in an airplane, in his 1913 airplane called "The Grand." The Wrights were the first people to fly an airplane, but you fly ON a Wright Flyer--it's very open. Sikorsky invented the enclosed cockpit.

The Wright Brothers are credited with building the first powered plane to fly in 1903. You can find information about this airplane in an article on Wikipedia and on the Wright-Brothers website.

Louis Blériot was the first person to fly across the English Channel in an airplane on 25 July 1909.
They were the first to fly an airplane successfully. The Wright brothers were not brilliant scientists, however they used scientific test and analysis to develope new designs that allowed the airplane to fly. They built a wind tunnel and measured the forces on their wing designs. They built gliders that were flown like a kit and then gliders that could carry a person. They added an engine to it and were the first person to fly a powered, heavier-than-air aircraft.
