Louis Washkansky

FIRST HEART TRANSPLANT

On December 3, 1967 South African surgeon Christiaan (proper South African spelling) Barnard conducted the first heart transplant on 53-year-old Lewis Washkansky. The surgery was a success. However, the medications that were given to Waskansky to prevent his immune system from attacking the new heart also suppressed his body's ability to fight off other infections. Eighteen days after the operation, Washkansky died of double pneumonia.

Hope this helped
