In 1682, William Penn was granted by King Charles II a charter (possibly as part repayment of a debt), to the territory. Previously, the area had had various European invaders (and different names) who did not necessarily get on well with the Native Americans.

He named the area Philadelphia from philos = love and delphia = brother; literally 'brotherly love'. He was a Quaker and treated the native Americans somewhat better than his predecessors, and enjoyed good relations with them.
