It was the North in the Civil War. The North's nicknames were the Yanks(Yankees) and the South's were the Rebels.
Everyone but themselves. They still do. A carpetbagger is a yankee who moves south for their own financial gain.
After the civil war, the south did have some coal mines (mainly in Kentucky if you consider that south). But the number one Industry in southern states was tobacco. Especially in North Carolina where the American Tobacco Company was founded by James B. Duke (Founder of Duke Universtiy). The major difference between north industry and south industry was there were virtually no unions in the south.
According to Wikipedia (refer to the link, below), "[the] design [was meant] as having "as little as possible of the Yankee blue", and . . . symbolizing the primary origins of the people of the South, with the cross of Britain and the red bar from the flag of France."
We call South Carolina south Carolina because that its name and its in a south direction.
