There is a convention that unnamed persons in scripture are often left unnamed so that we may then freely impute ourselves into the role or position of that individual in the story. That being so, the name of the "bad thief" is: (fill in your own name).

Then, realizing that the result of such an attitude and behaviour is loosing one's last best chance at salvation, one may choose to go the way of the other guy.

Tradition has named the repentant: "Dismas" and the unrepentant: "Gestas" but is not scriptural. In Matthew's Gospel, 27:44, both berate Jesus. In John's Gospel, 19:18 nothing is recorded coming from them. Only in Luke's Gospel, 23:39-43, is this version of the story, but neither are actually named; we are free to imagine ourselves in either role.

Neither of the theives are identified by name. We have no record of who either of them are. I think the real point of the story is that one recognized Jesus for who He was and received forgiveness.

Dismas and Gestas according to the Gospel of Nicocemus X:2 "And one of the malefactors that were hanged [by name Gestas] spake unto him, saying: If thou be the Christ, save thyself, and us. But Dysmas answering rebuked him, saying: Dost thou not at all fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? and we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus: Remember me, Lord, in thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him: Verily, verily, I say unto thee, that today thou shalt be (art) with me in paradise."

According to The Bible there wee clearly two thieves also on crosses at Calvary , along with Jesus. But one thing is clear their names are not mentioned at all.

While one taunted Jesus , the other asked Jesus forgiveness. and was saved.

The Bible does not tell us his name.

A tradition that began 300 years after the event (i.e., of no historical value whatsoever) gives him the name Dismas.
