The first grand prince was Rurik.
They were the tax collectors for the Mongols and controlled Muscovy. In the 1300s there was a rebellion against Mongol rule, and by 1505 Prince Ivan of Moscow had much of Russia under his control.
Moscow was founded by Iouri Dolgorouki. It was protected by a wooden wall in the XII century. The total area of the city does not exceed 5 hectares in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. In 1703, Peter the Great built Saint-Petersburg and Moscow ceased to be the capital of Russia. After the Russian Revolution in 1917, the Soviet government makes Moscow the capital of the Russian Federative Socialist Republic. The 30th December 1922, Moscow becomes the capital of the USSR. In 1991, the USSR is dissolved. Moscow is still the capital of Russia.
Ivan the Terrible of Russia was the Grand Prince of Moscow from 1533 until his death in 1584. He is considered the first Tsar of Russia, and therefore reigned under a monarchy.
He was the 15th century 'Grand Prince" of Moscow Ivan III, the first to style himself "Tsar". He lived from 1440 to 1505. He is famous for ending the Mongols' domination of Russia and for greatly extending the territories under Moscow's control.
